Gujarat and Andaman top State Startup Rankings 2019

New Delhi: Andaman and Gujarat top the State StartUp Rankings 2019 followed by Karnataka and Kerala.

The results of the second edition of Ranking of States on Support to Startup Ecosystems were released by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal through a virtual felicitation ceremony where his deputies — Hardeep Singh Puri and Som Parkash — were also present.

Speaking on the occasion, Goyal said that Startups have Out-of-the-box thinking, and are solution oriented, who look at new and new ideas.

He said that the Prime Minister has been fully appreciative and supportive of promoting entrepreneurs who are important from the point of job creation, expanding economic activity and for the prosperity of people.

To establish uniformity and ensure standardization in the ranking process, States and UTs have been divided into two groups.

While UTs except for Delhi and all States in North East India except Assam are placed in Category ‘Y’, all other States and UT of Delhi are in Category ‘X’.

A total of 22 States and three Union Territories participated in the exercise.

For the purposes of Ranking, States are classified into five Categories: Best Performers, Top Performers, Leaders, Aspiring Leaders, and Emerging Startup Ecosystems.

In Category X, Best Performer was bagged by Gujarat; Top Performers category was won by Karnataka and Kerala while in Leaders category, Bihar, Maharashtra, Odisha, and Rajasthan.

Aspiring Leaders were Haryana, Jharkhand, Punjab, Telangana and Uttarakhand while Emerging Startup Ecosystems category included Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.

In Category Y, Best Performer was Andaman and Nicobar Islands; in Leader category, there was Chandigarh and in Aspiring Leader category was Nagaland. In Emerging Startup Ecosystems category was won by Mizoram and Sikkim.

States are also recognised as Leaders in seven reform areas of support to startups.
