E-commerce giant Shopee laid-off 200 employees in Indonesia

According to media sources, the world’s largest online retailer Shopee has let go of 200 workers in Indonesia, largely from the customer care department.

The decision, according to a spokeswoman, is intended to increase Shopee Indonesia’s operational effectiveness.

The company also stated that impacted employees would get severance compensation in line with local laws, which will include a one-month salary bonus and access to health insurance for up to three months following their final day of employment. Muslim workers who were fired will also get a religious holiday allowance.

The information was released after Shopee reported its first-ever profitable quarter in Q4 2022, with an adjusted EBITDA of US $196.1 million. According to Data.ai, it continues to have the highest monthly active user count in Indonesia across both Google Play and the Apple Store.

As part of its cost-cutting initiatives in 2022, Sea Group laid off around 7,000 workers.
