Ed-tech platform Nafham acquired by Egyptian startup Tyro
Tyro, an edtech platform that connects students with trained instructors through one-on-one and group sessions, has agreed to buy Nafham, a social business that provides free crowd-sourced educational content, under a share-swap deal.
Tyro is an online tutoring platform that links students with top professional teachers, and it is now available in Egypt, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Saudi Arabia, whereas Nafham has developed an online platform that includes school curriculum and life skills content.
Tyro’s leadership will take over Nafham’s administration and operations as part of the purchase deal, with the goal of improving the customer experience for Nafham’s six million consumers. Tyro will serve as the general holding company, continuing to provide live tutoring services while also expanding the group’s technological capabilities. Tyro has also received money for the new company from Flat6Labs and NXL Partners, among others.
“Both companies joining forces will technically make us the largest ed-tech platform in the MENA region, providing both live online tutoring as well as recorded educational video content,” said Mokhtar Osman, Tyro’s chief executive officer (CEO).
“It is crucial to capitalize on both the technical capabilities and a solid customer base, to be successful. With this merger, we are well-positioned to take the platform to the next level. Nafham has a very strong and established brand presence within the MENA region which is why we’ll be focusing on further strengthening the Nafham brand.”
