India launches National Quantum Mission to empower startups

The Indian government has taken a major step towards boosting the country’s quantum technology ecosystem with the approval of the National Quantum Mission (NQM) by the cabinet.

Anurag Thakur, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting said, “The aim is to seed, nurture and scale scientific and industrial research and development to create a quantum computing ecosystem in the country.”

While speaking to BQ Prime, K Ananth Krishnan, chief technology officer at Tata Consultancy Services Ltd said. “The establishment of the National Quantum Mission, with investments in infrastructure, labs and testbeds will enable Indian industry and academia to take IP [intellectual property] leadership in a technology area of strategic importance.”

Prateek Jain, lead researcher and architect of quantum computing said, “There may be opportunities to collaborate with other companies and research institutions in the development of quantum computing.”

The Union Cabinet has approved the NQM of Rs 6,003 crore in order to make India a powerhouse in quantum computing space, globally.

The mission aims to promote research and development in quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum cryptography, quantum sensing, and quantum materials.

It is anticipated that the NQM will be beneficial to the Indian startups by creating an ecosystem that is conducive to the development of quantum technologies. This mission will back startups by giving them funding, mentors, networking, guidance etc. This mission will further form a huge network of quantum hubs in India providing a platform for researchers to share knowledge.

The mission will also focus in creating a domestic market for quantum technologies and will look into promoting the adoption of quantum technologies in several sectors including healthcare, finance, and defense.

The approval of the NQM will enhance India’s status as a leader in science and technology. The mission is part of the government’s broader vision to make India a global leader in science and technology by promoting innovation and research.
