200 more engineers laid-off by Ola in new wave of layoffs

In a new round of layoffs, Ola has let go of 200 engineers across its ride-hailing and finance companies, according to corporate sources.

About 10% of its 2,000 engineering employees will be laid go.

Earlier this year, the firm let go of about 1,000 workers in order to concentrate on its ride-hailing and electric vehicle operations.

A “super app” featuring a variety of services, including used vehicle sales, food and grocery delivery, cloud kitchens, and its primary ride-hailing service, was one of its first goals.

Ola did not disclose the precise number of layoffs but stated that it was engaging in a “restructuring exercise” and that it planned to increase its engineering headcount to 5,000 in the following 18 months as it intensifies its focus on cell manufacturing, a four-wheeler project, and other EV and ride-hailing-related initiatives.

The business said that it will enhance its technical skills throughout the engineering streams for autonomous vehicles, cells, batteries, manufacturing, and cells.

“In light of these efforts, the company is centralizing operations and is undertaking a restructuring exercise to minimize redundancy and build a strong lateral structure that strengthens relevant roles and functions,” Ola said in a statement.

After a fire incident involving one of the company’s flagship electric scooters, the S1 Pro, in March, Ola has also had trouble moving the product.
