India’s Ultraviolette raises $85 M to scale EV production and expand overseas

Indian electric motorcycle manufacturer Ultraviolette Automotive has secured $85 million in fresh funding, with Yali Capital and TDK Ventures leading the round, as the company looks to increase production and broaden its international footprint.

The financing also received backing from Lip-Bu Tan, chairman of Walden International and an adviser to Ultraviolette, along with the company’s existing and long-term investors, according to reports by Mint.

Ultraviolette intends to deploy the new capital toward expanding its manufacturing operations, developing its next generation of electric-vehicle platforms and supporting its international expansion plans.

Overseas expansion gains momentum

The Bengaluru-based company currently markets its F77 and X-47 electric motorcycles in India and Europe. It is also working on new models, including the Tesseract and Shockwave.

The company has announced plans to enter the US market in 2027, while simultaneously pursuing opportunities in Latin America and Southeast Asia.

International markets currently contribute around 15% of Ultraviolette’s sales volume. That share is expected to increase as the company broadens its presence overseas, based on comments from the company reported by Indian media.

New funding to support production growth

The latest capital comes as Ultraviolette prepares to add manufacturing capacity in India. Increasing output will be important as the company expands its product portfolio and builds the supply infrastructure needed to serve customers in international markets.

For Indian electric two-wheeler manufacturers, overseas markets provide an opportunity to reduce dependence on the intensely competitive domestic market. However, expanding internationally also brings country-specific requirements covering regulations, vehicle homologation, distribution networks and after-sales support.

Southeast Asia presents an especially competitive environment, with Japanese motorcycle manufacturers, fast-growing Chinese electric-vehicle companies and regional mobility businesses competing for market share.

The latest funding provides Ultraviolette with additional capital to expand production and develop overseas distribution. Its international growth, however, will ultimately depend on how effectively the company can convert its premium electric-motorcycle proposition into sustained demand beyond India.
