Working towards a green tag for all sustainable hotels on our platform: Ankit Gupta, CEO Oyo rooms
Needless to say, the growing trend in the sustainable industry is now in every ecosystem or penetrating with time or even faster. When we talk about the hospitality industry, the importance of sustainability is even more important considering the amount of water used daily, the amount of food, carbon footprint, electricity etc. should all be conserved at a larger scale considering the hospitality industry is a huge industry. Sustainability is the future if people want to live in a satisfactory manner for which certain steps have to be taken by the service sector as well. Even the investors now push the owners to be more sustainable and in today’s time, even people visiting the hotels are more aware of the environment and are conscious.
In 2022: a report by the UN (united nations) on climate change showcasing how the environment has been impacted leading to devastating harmful changes. Prediction of increasing extreme weather eventually will cause damage to wildlife, animals disturbing the natural ecosystem risking the temperatures to increase in another two decades. On the other hand, people have switched also to a more sustainable lifestyle however there have to be more efforts to cover up the lost years of harm to the environment. There are many changes that hotels should adopt for example using linens made of hemp or recycled fibres, complimentary water bottles with dispensers, solar-powered lights to save energy, water waste management, and the emphasis on new tech should be taken into use. Majorly hotels should focus on, rainforest protection, and house power, not for profit. Minimal carbon footprint, water conservation.
In an effort to enter the sustainable market, OYO is presently working toward differentiating sustainable hotels by giving them ‘green tags’. Hotels will come under the eco-friendly category by using solar power for light and rainwater harvesting. “We are working towards a green tag for all sustainable hotels on our platform,” said Ankit Gupta, CEO Oyo at a FICCI event.
