AWS to invest $12.7 B in Indian cloud infrastructure
As it continues to expand the Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure in important international markets, Amazon announced plans to invest $12.7 billion into the cloud business in India by 2030. This comes after the company cut back on a number of other services in the area.
In roles like engineering, telecommunications, and construction, the company added that its spending will support 131,700 full-time jobs.
The additional funding comes after AWS invested Rs 30,900 crores ($3.7 billion) between 2016 and 2022, bringing the total amount invested in India by Amazon’s cloud arm to Rs 1,36,500 crores ($16.4 billion) by 2030.
The local economy is likely to be impacted by AWS’s investment, particularly in sectors like workforce development, training and skill-building opportunities, community engagement, and sustainability initiatives.
AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai) and AWS Asia Pacific (Hyderabad) are the two regions of the US giant’s data centers that are currently operational in the nation.
The announcement also comes at the same time that Amazon is shutting down a number of operations in India, which led some analysts to wonder if the American company was reducing its presence there. Walmart, a major rival of Amazon, has also invested more than $2.5 billion in India so far this year.
With a clientele that includes the Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Axis Bank, HDFC Life, BankBazaar, Niti Aayog, PhysicsWallah, and Acko, Amazon’s cloud division commands a dominant position in the market.
