Blinkit receives Rs 500 Cr investment from Zomato
Zomato, the food tech giant, has invested Rs 500 crore, or almost $60 million, in Blinkit, its quick commerce subsidiary. Since the acquisition, Zomato has invested a total of Rs 2,800 crore in the quick commerce sector.
According to its regulatory filing obtained from the Registrar of Companies, the board of Blinkit has decided to issue 2,537 equity shares at an issue price of Rs 19,70,181 each in order to raise Rs 500 crore.
Only two months have passed since Zomato raised Rs 8,500 crore through a Qualified Institutions Placement (QIP) before investing in Blinkit. Strengthening Zomato’s financial position to support business expansion and strategic initiatives—particularly in the quick commerce segment through Blinkit—was the main goal of that fundraising effort.
This is the second time in seven months that Zomato has invested in Blinkit. It contributed Rs 300 crore ($36 million) to the business led by Albinder Dhindsa in June 2024. The food delivery behemoth paid Rs 4,477 crore ($568 million) for the acquisition of Blinkit, formerly known as Grofers.
In the second quarter of the current fiscal year, Zomato’s operating revenue increased by an astounding 68.5% from the previous quarter, from Rs 2,848 crore in Q2 FY24 to Rs 4,799 crore. Additionally, the Gurugram-based business reported a 4.8X increase in net profit to Rs 176 crore for the September quarter.
The operational revenue of Blinkit increased by 129% to Rs 1,156 crore in Q2 FY25 from Rs 504 crore in Q2 FY24. The addition of new stores and an increase in order frequency drove the segment’s gross order value (GOV) growth, which made a substantial contribution to the company’s overall revenue.
