By 2027, AWS intends to invest $15.25 B in its cloud infrastructure in Japan

In response to rising customer demand for cloud services in Japan, Amazon Web Services (AWS) on Friday revealed plans to invest 2.26 trillion yen ($15.25 billion) in its current cloud infrastructure in Tokyo and Osaka by 2027.

In a statement, AWS stated that the new AWS Economic Impact Study (EIS) for Japan indicates that the planned investment is expected to support an average of 30,500 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs in local Japanese businesses annually and contribute 5.57 trillion yen ($37.58 billion) to Japan’s GDP.

It was stated that AWS expects to have invested a total of 3.77 trillion yen ($25.44 billion) in cloud infrastructure in Japan by 2027, having already spent 1.51 trillion yen ($10.19 billion) in the nation between 2011 and 2022.

2009 saw the opening of AWS’s first office in Japan. In 2011, the AWS Asia Pacific (Tokyo) Region was established, and in 2021, the AWS Asia Pacific (Osaka) Region.

“For over a decade, AWS has been committed to helping our Japanese customers access the latest cutting-edge technology, build digital solutions on highly resilient and secure cloud infrastructure, and adapt their businesses to maintain an edge in today’s complex economic environment,” said Tadao Nagasaki, president of AWS in Japan.

“It will help more Japanese organizations with the ability to access and adopt new, emerging and transformational digital technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning. We are committed to and excited about the future of Japan’s digital economy,” he added.

Through the AWS Partner Network, which has 100,000 independent software vendors (ISVs) and systems integrators (SIs), AWS collaborates with both domestic and foreign partner communities in Japan.

AWS Partners has expanded its reach to 47 prefectures in Japan as of 2021, providing customers with an increased array of digital tools and services to further expedite the digital transformation process.

Eight of the top 14 Japanese companies that are recognized as AWS Premier Tier Services Partners have signed strategic collaboration agreements with AWS.

NHN Techorus, Hitachi Systems, Fujitsu, Classmethod, NTT DATA, NEC, Severworks, and SCSK are some of these Japanese partners.

The statement claims that AWS’s investment will keep being crucial in assisting Japanese businesses in a variety of industries to improve customer experiences and increase national productivity.

AWS declared that Amazon Bedrock will be generally available in the AWS Asia Pacific (Tokyo) Region in October 2023, with the goal of expediting the adoption of generative AI in Japan.

AWS also launched the AWS LLM Development Support Program in Japan as part of its commitment to speeding the creation of more varied and sector-specific large language models (LLMs).
