Nexstrom raises $12 M Seed funding to scale 2D semiconductor platform

Singapore-based semiconductor startup Nexstrom has secured $12 million in seed funding in a round led by Xora Innovation, with Foothill Ventures and SEEDS also participating. The company is developing a wafer-scale manufacturing platform for two-dimensional semiconductor materials.

The latest financing takes Nexstrom’s total funding to $15 million, including $3 million in non-dilutive capital, according to the company. The proceeds will support development of what Nexstrom describes as the industry’s first production-ready platform capable of growing 12-inch single-crystal 2D semiconductor materials using manufacturing tools designed for production environments.

The company’s work comes as chipmakers search for alternatives that can help sustain transistor scaling as conventional silicon channels increasingly encounter physical constraints.

Bringing 2D materials to wafer-scale manufacturing

2D semiconductor materials are atomically thin and can offer greater control over electron movement than shrinking silicon channels. Researchers and semiconductor manufacturers have explored the materials as a potential way to reduce leakage and improve energy efficiency in future transistor designs. However, achieving consistent production across full-sized wafers remains a significant obstacle to commercial adoption.

Nexstrom is combining its proprietary chemical vapour deposition equipment with specialised process technology and wafer-scale material-growth techniques. Rather than requiring fabs to adopt an entirely new production architecture, the startup is developing its system to work within existing advanced-foundry manufacturing processes.

The company is also collaborating with industry partners to test and validate the technology within established chipmaking workflows. As a result, the key hurdle extends beyond proving the effectiveness of 2D materials in laboratory devices. Nexstrom must demonstrate that the materials can be manufactured with the consistency, repeatability and yields expected from advanced semiconductor fabs.

From venture incubation to commercialisation

Nexstrom originated through Xora Innovation’s venture-building model. Co-founder and Chief Scientist Lance Li said a new materials platform will be necessary for the semiconductor industry to maintain performance improvements as conventional silicon approaches its practical boundaries.

At the centre of Nexstrom’s development roadmap is continuous single-crystal growth across standard 12-inch wafers. Successfully proving that capability could help close the gap between experimental research involving 2D semiconductors and their use in high-volume manufacturing.

Still, claims surrounding commercial readiness and industry-leading scale will need to be established through foundry evaluations, manufacturing-yield results and successful integration into semiconductor processes. Developing a reliable production method for a new material can take years, even after wafer-scale demonstrations have been achieved.

AI growth increases demand for efficient chips

Nexstrom’s funding comes as the rapid expansion of AI and high-performance computing pushes semiconductor designers to deliver greater computing power while operating within increasingly restrictive power and thermal constraints.

The industry is responding through several approaches, including advanced packaging, new transistor architectures and alternative semiconductor channel materials. These technologies can complement one another in efforts to improve chip performance while increasing energy efficiency.

For Nexstrom, upcoming progress will depend on whether its platform can preserve crystal quality across larger wafers, work reliably with established semiconductor process flows and achieve manufacturing economics that are attractive to foundries.

The outcome of those efforts will determine how quickly the company’s technology can transition from development-stage equipment to commercial semiconductor manufacturing.
