Southeast Asia Energy Transition Fund closed at $120 M by SUSI Partners
Southeast Asia Energy Transition Fund (SAETF) final closing was held by Swiss infrastructure fund manager SUSI Partners at the end of May, bringing the total amount of fund commitments to $120 million.
According to a statement released by SUSI Partners on Thursday, the fund invests in Southeast Asian energy transition infrastructure and has, to date, funded utility-scale renewable energy generation, energy efficiency, and distributed solar photovoltaics (PV) solutions for end users in the business and industrial sectors.
The statement claims that in addition to a few chosen private investors, SAETF’s investor base consists of seven development finance institutions.
The fund has added additional commitments from Austrian OeEB, British International Investment (BII), and BIO, the Belgian Investment Company for Developing Countries since receiving commitments from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), Dutch FMO, and Nordic DFIs Norfund and Swedfund at the first close.
According to SUSI Partners, Southeast Asia has consistently been among the economic regions with the fastest growth rates in the world over the past 20 years, and as a result, energy demand has grown as well.
At the same time, it claimed that international capital markets are still severely underserved in regard to financing the development of sustainable energy infrastructure that can provide widespread and secure access to clean and affordable energy throughout the region.
According to the report, SAETF plays a leading role in directing international capital toward Southeast Asia’s urgently needed clean energy transitions. This region is a highly appealing market for public and private investors looking to make investments with real social and economic impact.
The SAETF portfolio currently consists of four investments, including a joint venture with Malaysian company InvestEnergy that focuses on energy efficiency, a platform for the development of utility-scale renewable energy assets with Singapore-based Pacific Impact Development, and two investments with Singapore-based Entoria Energy and Asia Clean Capital Vietnam that concentrate on distributed solar PV solutions for commercial and industrial end clients.
The committed regional team at SUSI Partners intends to keep using the current platforms to deploy SAETF’s funds while expanding the portfolio in accordance with the Fund’s overall energy transition mandate.
