Philippine edtech firm EDGE Tutor raised $1 M Pre-A funding

After successfully closing a $800,000 seed round in 2023, EDGE Tutor International, an online tutoring outsourcing company based in the Philippines, has closed a $1 million Pre-Series A funding round.

Seaborne Capital, M Venture Partners, Kaya Founders, Orvel Ventures, IdeaSpace, Lorinet Foundation, and well-known angel investors led the Pre-Series A round, the company said in a statement on Thursday.

EDGE Tutor stated that it will use this additional funding to scale its operations and further enter North America, Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East, further advancing its goal of giving Filipino educators access to international online employment opportunities.

Through further expansion into the Americas, Europe, and the Middle East—regions that have increased from 5 percent of revenue in 2022 to 30 percent in 2024, with plans to surpass 50 percent by 2026—the new investment will support the company’s next phase of growth.

Additionally, the company intends to invest in artificial intelligence (AI)-driven automation for curriculum development, teacher training, quality control, and lesson delivery, as well as to increase its tutoring capacity from 1,000 to 5,000 by 2026.

“There’s nothing artificial about the passion and dedication of our 1,000+ tutors,

“We see it every day in the way they connect with students and make learning come alive,” said Henry Motte de la Motte, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of EDGE Tutor.

“Our 50 clients across 30 countries are experiencing firsthand that live instruction isn’t just valuable—it’s in demand,

“AI makes for a great co-pilot and a powerful supplement between live sessions, but we (along with our clients and their learners) find that nothing replaces the power of human connection,” he added.

With locations in Manila, Singapore, London, and New York, EDGE Tutor has established itself as a pioneer in the online tutoring outsourcing sector, connecting top-notch Filipino teachers with tutoring firms across the globe.

The company offers end-to-end management and qualified tutors to international education companies through its business-to-business (B2B) model. This allows them to offer live instruction at scale under their own brand through a fully managed, white-labeled service.

“Every learner deserves a great teacher, and some of the best are right here in the Philippines,

“This investment allows us to expand global access to our world-class Filipino tutors while providing them with training, technology, and coaching to excel in online teaching,” said Cecilia Calvo Lewis, Chief Operating Officer of EDGE Tutor.

The global tutoring market is estimated to be worth $200 billion, and even after the pandemic, its online segment is expanding at a rate of 15% annually.

Eighty percent of tutoring still occurs in-person, with only twenty percent taking place online, despite the rise in digital education. This shows a huge opportunity for the online tutoring businesses that EDGE Tutor supports.

The company has already given 800,000 lessons since its 2023 launch, and it is expected to reach 1 million by the beginning of 2025.
