Winners for African App Launchpad Cup announced
The winners of the third edition of the African App Launchpad Cup, which aims to help African tech companies in the field of digital applications and game development, have been revealed by Egypt’s Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA).
ITIDA, the Egyptian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCITexecutive)’s arm, partnered with IBM for this year’s edition of the competition, which is part of the “African App Launchpad” presidential initiative, which aims to develop the skills and abilities of 10,000 African youth while also providing support to 100 African startups in the field of digital applications and game development.
The competition included two tracks: application development and game creation, with rewards totalling up to $72,000 awarded to the victors. IBM will assist startup enterprises and next-generation developer communities in gaining access to a variety of its data-related initiatives.
In all, 245 companies from 16 African nations applied to compete in the final round, with 50 making it to the first round and 28 making it to the final. The results were announced via video conference by the Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat.
Six startups placed first, second, and third in the two competition tracks, earning a total of $48,000 in cash. MCIT awarded a cash incentive of $1,000 to the other teams who advanced to the finals.
Africa Innovation Technology Group of Cameroon took top prize in the App Development category, followed by Boxconn Technologies of Ghana and Qme of Egypt in second and third places, respectively.
