World Economic Forum recognized six African startups as Technology Pioneers for 2022
The World Economic Forum (WEF) has chosen six African digital firms among the top 100 most promising Technology Pioneers of 2022, companies that are reshaping sectors ranging from healthcare to retail and beyond.
The WEF Technology Pioneers are early to growth-stage businesses from across the world that is using new technologies and innovation to have a substantial effect on business and society.
Six Africans are among the participants in this year’s cohort, three of them are from Kenya. Access Afya is an e-health firm, Sendy is an e-commerce fulfilment platform, and Pula is an agri-tech solution.
Nigerian API fintech firm Okra, Rwandan e-moto platform Ampersand, and Cameroonian fintech Ejara are among the other WEF Technology Pioneers.
“By joining this community, Technology Pioneers begin a two-year journey where they are part of the World Economic Forum’s initiatives, activities and events, bringing their cutting-edge insight and fresh thinking to critical global discussions. Technology Pioneers are an integral part of the Forum’s Global Innovators community, which is an invitation-only group of the world’s most promising start-ups and scale-ups that are at the forefront of technological and business model innovation,” said WEF in a statement.
Seven African firms made the list last year. Kuda (Nigeria), 54gene (Nigeria), Moringa School (Kenya), Sokowatch (Kenya), mPharma (Ghana), FlexFinTx (Zimbabwe), and Cambridge Industries were the companies involved (Ethiopia).
