$91 M Series C funding raised by SA’s Clickatell for US expansion, product acceleration

Clickatell, a South African firm that has grown to be a global leader in chat commerce, has raised US $91 million in a Series C round of investment to speed up product development and extend its foothold in the US (US).

Clickatell is a global leader in chat commerce, assisting businesses in connecting, interacting, and transacting with customers at any time and from any location. With over 10,000 clients and offices in the United States, Canada, South Africa, and Nigeria, Clickatell’s low/no-code, feature-rich platform lies at the confluence of communications and commerce.

Arrowroot Capital led the $91 million Series C round, which also included Kennedy Lewis Investment Management, Endeavor Global, and Harvest.

Clickatell will utilize the Series C funding to accelerate the development of its service, extend its footprint in the United States, and scale its sales and marketing operations, which has seen double-digit profitable growth for several years.

The additional funds will also enable the firm to dramatically expand its engineering capabilities. Over 200 roles have already been set aside, with a significant emphasis on bolstering its African skills complement in the coming months.

“In 2019, Clickatell was the first to launch chat banking, bringing banking services functionality to chat channels. Our successes would not be possible without the trust and collaboration of our customers, some of Africa’s largest and most successful companies in the world,” said Pieter de Villiers, co-founder and CEO at Clickatell.

“We look forward to working with businesses and financial institutions across the continent to enable chat commerce, the future of digital commerce and engagement. Soon, every consumer in Africa will engage family and friends via chat plus connect, interact and transact with the brands they love through their favourite chat platform.”
