Zenius laid-off additional 30 employees in fresh wave of layoffs

30 positions have been eliminated in a fresh wave of layoffs at Indonesia-based edtech business Zenius, a company representative said as per reports.

Zenius stated in a statement that the choice was taken to preserve its viability and long-term growth in the face of the present economic crisis, which has been devastating to the startup community. “All aspects of the business are being optimized to improve efficiency, including a reduction in workforce,” the company added.

The affected employees will continue to have access to their health insurance coverage and wellness coaching through March 30 as well as receive severance compensation in accordance with local laws.

At least two waves of employment layoffs were performed by Zenius in 2022. 200 people, or around 20% of the overall workforce at the time, were impacted by the first round in May. The firm did not say how many employees were affected by the second round of layoffs in August, but it did say that practically all divisions experienced job losses.

As Indonesian students were forced to study at home due to the Covid-19 outbreak, Zenius began to grow. In an effort to refine its hybrid online-offline services, it purchased Primagama, a neighborhood offline teaching platform, in February 2022. According to statistics from Tech in Asia, the business has raised around $40 million.

Despite its previous increased expansion, significant rival Ruangguru also fired hundreds of workers last year.
