Kenyan mobility startup BuuPass raises undisclosed funding from Yango Ventures

Yango Ventures has contributed an undisclosed sum of strategic funding to the Kenyan mobility startup BuuPass.

BuuPass, a B2B2C mobility marketplace founded in 2016 by Sonia Kabra and Wyclife Omondi, allows users to search, compare, and book travel tickets via web, app, or USSD. Its SaaS platform also assists bus operators in managing their operations, inventory, and sales.

In addition to participating in the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa and receiving funding from the Google for Startups Black Founders Fund, the startup has sold over 16 million travel tickets and generated over US$100 million in total sales value to date.

Following a US$1.3 million pre-seed raise in 2023, the startup acquired QuickBus of South Africa last year. Yango Ventures has since contributed an additional, undisclosed sum of money to the venture.

The US$20 million corporate venture fund Yango Ventures was established in April by the multinational ride-hailing and tech conglomerate Yango Group with a focus on early-stage African startups. More than just a financial wager, its investment in BuuPass is a calculated first step toward what it hopes will be a sustained presence on the continent.

“We are more than just a tech company; we are an ecosystem committed to empowering entrepreneurs worldwide,” said Yango Group CEO Daniil Shuleyko. “Through Yango Ventures, we’re sharing our expertise and network to help startups scale, thrive, and drive meaningful change in their communities.”

“Yango leans in with insight, not just capital,” Kabra said.
