Hanoi receives $588 M in high-tech investment due to Viettel’s $1.3 billion chip facility

The capital city of Vietnam attracted $588.2 million in high-tech investment in the first half of 2026 thanks in large part to Viettel’s $1.3 billion investment in a semiconductor fabrication plant.
Japan’s Meiko invested an additional $190 million in semiconductor-electronics in the city during that time, according to a statement released on Wednesday by the Hanoi Hi-Tech Parks and Industrial Zones. The production-business revenue of local businesses hit $6.7 billion, jumping 109.3 percent from the previous year, according to the high-tech park management board.
In January 2026, the 27-hectare Viettel facility held its groundbreaking ceremony. It is recognized as a national infrastructure for the design, development, testing, and manufacturing of chips.
With trial production scheduled for the end of 2027, Viettel is aiming for 32-nanometer chip technology. Viettel hopes to finish construction, obtain technology transfer, and start trial production by the end of 2027.
There are now over 6,000 semiconductor engineers in Vietnam. Through the National Semiconductor Human Resource Development Program, the government hopes to have 50,000 chip design engineers by 2030.
The group’s overall income reached VND223 trillion ($8.92 billion), exceeding the yearly target by 8.5%, according to Viettel’s 2025 annual financial declaration. The post-tax earnings exceeded the plan by 11.4 percent, coming in at about $1.79 billion. The state received $1.69 billion in tax payments compared to a plan of $1.65 billion, or 2.7 percent more.
In 241 projects, Vietnam’s semiconductor industry has received $14.2 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) thus far.
Intel has invested more than $4 billion in Ho Chi Minh City, Hana Micron has invested $930 million in Bac Ninh province, Amkor Technology has invested $1.6 billion in an advanced packaging plant in Bac Ninh province, and Samsung intends to invest billions of dollars in Thai Nguyen province.
