Upper Egypt’s green entrepreneurs empowered by Athar Climate Action Accelerator
The Athar Climate Action Accelerator Demo Day was held on September 5, 2024, at Surf & Turf, Minya, and was proudly announced by Athar Accelerator. At this event, which culminates the 5th cohort of the Climate Action Acceleration Programme, some of Egypt’s most innovative green entrepreneurs will showcase their ground-breaking approaches to sustainability, clean energy, agriculture, and the circular economy.
This program, which is funded by the Finnish embassies in Cairo and Hivos and collaborates with Creativa Innovation Hubs in Upper Egypt, assists startups that are tackling important environmental issues. These forward-thinking businesses have the potential to boost economic growth and the creation of green jobs in Egypt and the MENA region, all while making a positive impact on the global fight against climate change.
Ten creative startups from Upper Egypt have showcased their solutions during the event, addressing important areas like sustainable furniture, organic fertilizers, renewable energy, eco-friendly biopesticides, and more. These businesses are a part of an impact-driven, diverse group committed to advancing environmental sustainability and a more environmentally friendly future.
The Green Manifesto’s introduction The Green Manifesto, a statement of values and commitment to assisting underrepresented founders in the green industry in Upper Egypt and other neglected areas, was unveiled at the event in addition to the startup pitches. Building sustainable communities that support long-term growth and innovation, acknowledging the diversity of startups, and empowering local entrepreneurs are all highlighted in the manifesto.
“We are incredibly proud of this year’s cohort,” said Shoaib Elqady, CEO of Athar Accelerator. “These founders are not only creating solutions to some of our most pressing environmental challenges but are also laying the groundwork for sustainable economic development in Egypt and the wider region. Their success is a testament to the growing importance of climate action in the startup ecosystem. We’ve seen a diversity of startups, ranging from those with high growth potential to small and medium enterprises. It is essential to continue supporting these businesses while recognising their differences as they reach their next milestones. Not all startups are suitable for venture capital funding, but we need to introduce new funding models that can cater to their unique needs, ensuring they thrive long-term.”
