16 category winners announced by Global Startup Awards Africa

The Global Startup Awards (GSA) Africa has named sixteen startups from across the continent as winners.

Over 15,000 African innovators from 54 countries have been nominated for the GSA Africa Awards, which are run in partnership with the Global Innovation Initiative Group (GIIG), the Ethiopian Ministry of Labour and Skills (MOLS), the Ethiopian Ministry of Innovation and Technology (MInT), and the Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI) Ethiopia. Since the awards’ inception in 2021, over 300 jurors, ambassadors, and hundreds of innovation hubs throughout the continent have supported the program.

Hiryo, an app for women’s safety and anti-harassment that uses cutting-edge technology like artificial intelligence to support women, make them feel safer, and combat gender-based violence, won Startup of the Year among the 16 African winners, which span a variety of categories in the startup ecosystem.

Awabah, a digital technology company based in Nigeria that aims to create wealth and give workers in the informal sector financial sustainability, was named Best Newcomer. Ethiopia’s Coffee Resurrect won Best Greentech, Nigeria’s Dataleum took home Best Ed-Tech, and Kenya’s BasiGo took home the Best Mobility & Logistics title.

The Diversity Role Model of the Year award went to Freeziana.com of Egypt, Emergency Response Africa of Nigeria, Ghana’s Developers in Vogue, and Best HealthTech to Emergency Response Africa of Nigeria.

Leading Egyptian business designer and innovation consultant Hani W. Naguib was named Ecosystem Hero, and Mo Angels of Mauritius was named VC of the Year. Momint won Best Web 3.0 Startup, and MooMe of Tunisia took home Best Agritech Startup.

Tech Buzz Hub (Uganda) won Best Co-working Space; The American University in Cairo Venture Lab (Egypt) won Best Accelerator/Incubator Program; and Zofi Cash (Uganda) won Best Commerce Tech. Zuri Health (Nigeria) was the recipient of the Future Shaper Award.

“The Global Startup Awards Africa aims to raise the visibility of African innovation as a unifying mechanism that transcends borders, cultures, and nationalities as well as the diverse maturity levels of the various startup ecosystems. It provides a common language for us all, fostering understanding and connection, and providing a platform to implement a shared vision of scaled impact,” said Jo Griffiths, co-founder of the GSA Africa and GIIG.
